Step-by-step guide
OK, let’s get started.
Step 1: Pick your pal
Decide who you want to do this cozo with—a close friend or significant other is a great choice. Get them on board with the idea. Perhaps you pick a friend who’s also been wanting to get outside and can really use the push.
Step 2: Plan out the logistics together
Once you have your partner-in-crime onboard, align with them on the following things:
When should we do this? Lock in a date when you’re both free.
What are our boundaries when it comes to location? Determine the radius of where you’ll be doing the scavenger hunt. (i.e. if you’re in a major city, maybe you limit the radius to certain neighborhoods)
How many activities do we each want to come up with? You and your partner will need to decide how many activities each of you must come up with. The goal is to complete all activities in one day, so be realistic. Five activities each, or 10 total, is a great starting point; 10 activities each, or 20 total, can be more challenging to do in a day. Depending on where you’ll be exploring, your mode of transportation from one activity to the next, and even things like the weather outside, pick a suitable number that is challenging, yet realistic. For example, LA is very spread apart, so 10 each might be excessive.
Are there any other boundaries we want to set? These boundaries are completely up to you both to decide. Maybe you agree to avoid inside activities to ensure safety during COVID-19, or maybe you create a budget limit of $50 each. Whatever it is, make sure you and your partner align on the boundaries.
Step 3: Brainstorm your activities
The fun begins. A week before the scavenger hunt (or a few days before), write down a list of 5-10 things to do and/or see in your city or town, and have your partner do the same. Make sure not to share your lists with each other until the day of the scavenger hunt.
Have fun with it! The world is your oyster. Since Covid-19 is restricting many activities inside (and across the board), you may need to get creative. If you’re doing this with a lover, maybe you incorporate a couple romantic activities to do together.
EXAMPLE
Let’s pretend you live in New York City. Your list could look something like this:
Get a photo with the Statue of Liberty in the background.
Order “the usual” at Katz Deli.
Find the tiger mural in SoHo.
Silent disco in front of the Atlantic Barclays Center for five minutes.
Order Korean food in Queens.
Slow dance in Grand Central Station for a full song.
Step 4: Finalize + write them down
Finalize your activities and write them down on a clean sheet of paper, or your phone.
Step 5: Swap your lists
On the day of the scavenger hunt, swap your list with your friend/partner to see what the adventure for the day entails. You’ll want to map out the best route to completing all of the activities—remember, the goal is to complete all of the activities in one day.
Step 6: Venture out
Mask up and set out for your adventure. Take a photo during each activity to document the day. When you finish, reward yourselves with something special. Take a moment to remember that adventure is always possible.
