Step-by-step guide

OK, let’s get started.

Step 1: Pick what you want to paint

There are many DIY paint by numbers kits online. We’ve narrowed it down to a few solid websites that sell paint by numbers kits at a reasonable price. The best thing about these kits is that they include all of the materials you will need to create your masterpiece.

This activity is a perfect one to do with others, so perhaps you ask friends or family if they’re interested and you can plan to do it together one evening.

Step 2: Get ready to paint

Once the kit arrives, it’s time to start painting! A couple pointers:

  • Pick a clean space with good lighting. A clean space will help you focus.

  • Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Or get yourself an art smock

  • Make sure your canvas is sturdy and set it to a height that feels comfortable for you.

  • Paint the smallest areas first, then the medium-sized, followed by the largest areas.

  • Paint the whole painting with a single color before moving on to the next one.

  • Let the areas dry completely before painting neighboring sections.

Patience, patience, patience. Depending on what type of canvas you choose, some are more time-consuming and detailed than others. If you choose one with many numbers and sections, be patient. Good things take time. There’s no need to rush the painting. Take your time and enjoy every brushstroke.

Blending Colors

If you want to blend colors, try this technique.

If you decide you don’t want to blend colors, that is totally OK. It’s your painting and your style of art! There is no right or wrong. But remember to allow a color to dry before moving to another color so you don't accidentally start to blend colors.

Step 3: Finish what you started

This activity is an exercise in patience and discipline as much as it is an art activity. If it takes you a month or more to finish it, that’s perfectly okay, as long as you follow through on the entire piece.

Step 4: Frame it or gift it

When you finish your art piece, consider framing it—this will help make the painting really pop as an art piece. Hang up in your home or gift it to a friend or family member.

Last but not least, take a moment to admire your masterpiece. You did it!
