Step-by-step guide
OK, let’s get started.
Step 1: Pick a pal or go solo
The first decision you want to make is whether or not you are planning this trip with someone else (or others) or doing this trip solo. Determining that upfront is helpful to help plan for the rest of the trip.
Step 2: Decide on the length of the trip
Once you understand who may be coming with you, you’ll want to settle on how many days you have for this trip. Is it a day trip? Is it a weekend trip? Or is it a week long or more?
This part is important because that can help inform where you ultimately choose to go. For example, if you only have time for a day trip or weekend trip, then you’ll most likely have to choose somewhere close enough and limit the time spent traveling to the destination.
Step 3: Pick somewhere new and different
Oftentimes when people plan trips, they default to places they’ve already visited or places that are very similar to places they’ve visited. But part of the adventure (and getting out of your comfort zone) in taking a spontaneous trip is picking a place you’ve never been to before.
We recommend picking somewhere totally new and different. Maybe it’s even a place that you’re unsure about—even better. The more “unsure” if you’ll like it or not, the more opportunity there is to be surprised with its unique culture and flavors.
Step 4: Book ASAP
One of the key aspects to making this trip spontaneous is booking it as soon as you decide where you want to go AND we recommend scheduling it to happen within the next month. Don’t wait to book the flight or the car or the Airbnb. Don’t “sleep on it.” Book it right then and there, on the spot, as soon as you decide.
This step makes the trip feel real—it solidifies the fact that you’re going and it gives you something to look forward to in the next month. It makes the trip spontaneous!
